This piece of conversation from yesterday was just *golden*. Manager got a phone call from a recruitment company, and the moment he finished the phone call he came over to tell me this piece...

Agent: Are you still looking for a COGNOS resource?
Manager: No, I'm not.
A: But you were looking for a COGNOS resource?
M: No... if I had I would remember.
A: But it says here on my record that you did?
M: I'm a Test Manager. If I hire someone I'd hire a Tester.
A: Ah. Ok. Ooh, are you looking for a Test Manager?
M: ............not really...

On second thought, it's probably not as funny and is indicative of the current job market, but still...

QOTD:

"Whatever he's done now can't be worse than what he's going to do."
25th-Sep-2009 12:52 pm - In a class of his own. [housemates]
Few weeks back my housemate's father came to visit her. What happened was a source of laughter I've used for weeks... let's take stock of the situation.
  1. The father came on short notice; he didn't bring luggage, only carry-on.
  2. Last time when the daughter went back for holiday, she bought a pot and a frying pan and couldn't bring them back with her due to weight limitation.
  3. She asked the father to bring the pot and frying pan, which he packed into his carry-on luggage.
  4. He arrived at 5AM.
  5. His daughter waited for him to come out for around 40-50 minutes, way after all of the other passengers had cleared out of the immigration.
After he met with the daughter, he told her that he was pulled aside by an immigration officer and questioned...
Officer: Do you have a return ticket?
Uncle: Yes.

Talking about this later, housemate and I realised that he was probably pulled aside because of fact 1-3. So you have a middle-aged man travelling alone, no luggage, carrying pot and frying pan in his carry-on bag... he probably seemed like he was going to escape out into the outback and disappear to avoid going back home or something. And then, the rest of the conversation...
Officer: What's the purpose of your visit?
Uncle: Visiting someone.
O: Who are you visiting?
U: My daughter.
O: What does your daughter do?
U: Hmmm. I think, she deals with drugs.
...they only let him go after he told them that his daughter worked as a pharmacist.

I like his justification the best.
Housemate: Why did you say that?! No wonder they kept you there!
Uncle: They ask me stupid questions, I give them stupid answers.
Classy. I have to admit, that Uncle is quite a character...
11th-Sep-2009 01:17 pm - Always and always [blessings, family]
This post is just to state that I have an awesome younger brother.
Sure he's better than me in everything, and excels at anything he wants to, and eclipses me in everything he does, but that's why he's awesome! :D (I am, sadly, one of those sad excuse of an older sibling.)

I think it's about time I spoil him again. He's already got a laptop, so don't think I should buy another one for him... wonder what else I can get him...
Conversation relayed to me... (by AH, who said that he's rather saddened by the remark).

AH had just bought Arkham Asylum, and had just showed it to his housemate, ST.

ST: In your hands, Batman becomes Baaaaaaadman.

Probably shouldn't had posted this, but I can't help cracking up everytime I remember it...
25th-Aug-2009 01:09 pm - I'm STILL ALIVE [art, blessings, games, geeky]
My best achievement for the last 2 weeks... was managing to memorise the whole lyrics of "Still Alive" from Portal. Just a little bit more, and I'd be able to sing the whole song without even having to think about what's the next sentence.

Other than that, hi, world!

Had an excellent birthday this year. Received one of the most unusual birthday present ever: a bottle of sacramental sweet red wine. Unblessed, but hey, it's still unique! Got a lot of other presents too, which got me going "Squee!".

Uploaded a few photos to my Flickr account and made a random drawing. Sketched at work (during a meeting (while sitting in front of my manager (who's completely aware of what I was doing (and was not bothered by it)))) and coloured it at home. Thinking that it might make a good wallpaper material. Maybe.

Tried to play Precipice of Darkness, and from what I saw I liked it. But being a collector, I long for a physical copy... (not really comfortable with the whole digital copy concept thank you). Also, found out that Metal Gear Solid 4 was best described as "cinematic". With equally stunning soundtrack. Watched quite a number of games/rounds of Team Fortress 2. Finally understood why it seemed like a lot of fun. Not something I'd play, but it's fun to watch. Started playing Sims 3, and damned was it difficult trying to find the right moment/gap to save your game and stop playing.

Have been slowly (ever so slowly) nibbling at my stash of Koko Black chocolate. While it's pure chocolate heaven, it's also a curse... forever now Cadbury chocolate had lost its appeal. Now Lindt is the new Cadbury for me (ie., the next cheaper chocolate to eat when I can't get the better stuff). On that note, Godiva can't complete with Koko Black either.

Other than that, busy, and will be busier still.

2nd-Jul-2009 12:18 pm - Notes from holiday [family, holiday]
Just came back from a 10 days holiday to visit my parents in Jakarta and my Aunt in Singapore. Things I learnt for next time:
  • When you stay at a hotel in Singapore and can pay $20 extra to get breakfast buffet, DON'T. Just because it's a 5-stars hotel doesn't mean the breakfast buffet will be good. It's effin' SINGAPORE, rather than eat the breakfast buffet, go out and eat hawker food. It's cheaper too.
  • If you're an internet addict... you die. A 5-stars hotel does NOT give you free wi-fi (S$32 for 24 hours, damn you Meritus Mandarin Orchard). There is, however, an unreliable wi-fi internet you can connect to for free assuming your phone has international roaming. One of the phone network you can connect to gives you access to free wi-fi, but only for 24 hours.
  • ...don't eat Western food (like fish & chips, etc). They just don't taste as nice. Honestly. Especially if you come from a Western country. Just stick to the hawker food. As an example, people here consider the fish & chips in Freo to be "OK". Compared to the one I ate in Singapore... the one in Freo would be considered "wonderful".
  • Of you walk around in Takashimaya's ground floor (where all the food are), there are lots of things that look interesting. However, look and presentation does not equal taste. The Japanese sweets I tried, while pretty as heck, didn't actually taste special. ...except for the cherry-jelly.
  • Kinokuniya in Takashimaya Orchard Rd? It's a financial black-hole. But hey, I'm damn happy. Found 1 Neal Stephenson novel in the exact edition I've been looking for, and China Mieville's latest novel in paperback. I'm stoked. I noticed I couldn't find manga-drawing-supplies anymore though... strange.
  • There's a tea shop on Takashimaya's ground floor which sells Chocolate Tea. Chocolate. Tea. Haven't tried it yet, but... if I'm correct, I can get high just by smelling it. There's no need to drink it... next time in Singapore I need to go see the main shop in Plaza Singapore.Still wants to buy their Creme Caramel tea in loose leaf...
There are others I can't think of at the moment...
29th-Jun-2009 01:40 am - The alien's messengers [geeky, holiday]
Posting this just because I found it highly amusing.

SYDNEY (Reuters) - The mystery of crop circles in poppy fields in Australia's southern island state of Tasmania has been solved -- stoned wallabies are eating the poppy heads and hopping around in circles.

"We have a problem with wallabies entering poppy fields, getting as high as a kite and going around in circles," the state's top lawmaker Lara Giddings told local media on Thursday.

"Then they crash. We see crop circles in the poppy industry from wallabies that are high," she said.

Many people believe crop circles that mysteriously appear in fields around the world are created by aliens.

Poppy producer Tasmanian Alkaloids said livestock which ate the poppies were known to "act weird" -- including deer and sheep in the state's highlands.

"There have been many stories about sheep that have eaten some of the poppies after harvesting and they all walk around in circles," said field operations manager Rick Rockliff.

Australia produces about 50 percent of the world's raw material for morphine and related opiates.

Other news... am on holiday (which willl shortly end), and hasn't been online much. Lots of things I wanted to write about, but ehh... for now I need to sleep.

P.S.: I've named my AspireOne Azzura, and she's awesome. Especially when I'm travelling. Like now.
13th-Jun-2009 01:55 pm - Amazon tags [book]
